Flash Fiction Unveiled

with Slawka Scarso

Workshop:

Flash fiction is becoming more and more popular, with literary magazines and competitions calling for submissions from all corners of the world. And with sometimes only 20 minutes necessary to write a first draft, it’s the perfect genre even for writers who find it hard to make time for their greatest passion. But what is flash fiction? Is it just a very, very short story? During this workshop we will start from the basics, from what makes a flash piece. Through examples, exercises and prompts that will get us immediately writing flash, we will see what it takes to create a complete story in just a few hundred words. We will discuss the importance of a title in a piece that sometimes is only 100-word long (if not 50)! We will talk about generative techniques to find new ideas for flash. We will also look at how to play with structure to create inventive and fun pieces and how to address language and rhythm. And finally, we will talk about novellas in flash and the possibilities of writing a longer work, but made of separate, stand-alone pieces.
