    JUDE HIGGINS

    SPRING INTO FLASH

    SATURDAY 23 MARCH 2024

Where: Maison Internationale des Associations, rue des Savoises 15, 1205 Geneva

    Time:   10:30-16:30

    MORNING SESSION:

In this session, we’ll  start by briefly looking  at definitions and  examples of flash fiction. I’ll then provide prompts to help you write fast first drafts of stories with seasonal  themes of renewal and growth.

    AFTERNOON SESSION:

In the afternoon, we’ll look at more examples of flash fiction to show how much can be conveyed  in very few words. You’ll take one of the short pieces you wrote in the morning and I’ll introduce several different ways of re-drafting to add colour, depth and meaning  to a very short  story.

    Bio

Jude has been writing flash fiction since 2013 and has been widely published in magazines and anthologies as well as winning or being placed in many contests. SARA NISHA ADAMS

WRITING IS REWRITING: HOW TO EDIT FICTION

    SUNDAY 21 APRIL 2024

Where: Maison Internationale des Associations, rue des Savoises 15,1205 Geneva

    Time:   10:30-16:30

    Workshop

Editing your writing is as creative and crucial a process as writing your first draft. Throughout this one-day workshop, we'll explore how to edit our fiction to get the best out of our writing. We'll look at the broader scope of our stories, as well as our style and narrative voice, playing with structure, nurturing and interrogating characters, and experimenting with and establishing our unique prose styles. Together, we’ll spend time as reader, writer and editor, to determine the questions we need to be asking of our own writing, so that each character, each scene and each sentence comes to life on the page.

The workshop will be interactive, with individual and group activities, plus plenty of opportunity to discuss techniques and queries regarding your writing.

    GWG ONLINE WORKSHOP

    KEN LIU

CRAFT, MAGIC, AND THE MIND MADE TANGIBLE

    SATURDAY 25 MAY 2024

    1900 - 20:30 CET (VIA ZOOM)

    Workshop

In this workshop on secondary worlds, author Ken Liu will lead attendees on a reexamination of the concept of "worldbuilding" to find an alternative to the traditional approach of "objective" worldbuilding. Instead, a character-driven, "subjective" approach can help you find your story in a compelling new world.

The format of the workshop will consist of a mini-lecture followed by writing exercises (total of 60 minutes). There will be an additional 30 minutes of discussion/Q&A at the end.

    Bio

Ken Liu is an American author of speculative fiction. A winner of the Nebula, Hugo, and World Fantasy awards, he wrote the Dandelion Dynasty, a silkpunk epic fantasy series (starting with The Grace of Kings), as well as short story collections The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories and The Hidden Girl and Other Stories. He also penned the Star Wars novel The Legends of Luke Skywalker. Prior to becoming a full-time writer, Liu worked as a software engineer, corporate lawyer, and litigation consultant. Liu frequently speaks at conferences and universities on a variety of topics, including futurism, machine-augmented creativity, history of technology, bookmaking, and the mathematics of origami.

    BASHIR SAKHAWARZ

    POETRY IN MEMOIR

    SATURDAY 8 JUNE 2024

Where: Maison Internationale des Associations, rue des Savoises 15, 1205 Geneva. Room Steve Biko

    Time:   10:30-16:30

    10:30 - 13:00 Workshop    |    14:00 - 16:30 Critiquing session

    MORNING SESSION: 10:30 - 13:00

    Workshop: Poetry in Memoir

In this workshop, we explore the ways to find a memoir in you. Some people seem to be born with an innate ability to come up with innovative and imaginative ideas. They may have a natural inclination towards artistic expression, problem-solving, or thinking outside the box. Others can develop such ability by practicing. The workshop expands on the ways you can become a memoir writer, including finding your authentic voice and using poetic techniques in your writing to help transport the reader.

Bashir will read from his latest work at the end of the morning session.

    AFTERNOON SESSION: 14:00 - 16:30

    Critiquing - 8 participants maximum

The afternoon will be a critiquing session for eight participants. Pieces are limited to 1400 words of prose. They can be sent to Bashir in advance via GWG or they can be presented on the day. Please email us separately (genevawriters@gmail.com) if you would like to have your work critiqued.
